Does A Certain Percentage Of People Never Get Hair Loss or Shedding? How Many?

Does A Certain Percentage Of People Never Get Hair Loss or Shedding? How Many?

When your hair is falling out aggressively, it starts to wear on you after a while.

You often look for proof that you are not alone and that you are not the only one going through this.

And, luckily, this is easily accomplished by going to hair loss forums. Still, many of us look around at our family and friends and don't see anyone who is going through the same thing. So we start to wonder how common telogen effluvium truly is

. Someone might ask: "what percentage of women will actually experience telogen effluvium in their life time? I have been dealing with shedding for about five months. I've finally been connecting with people on a hair loss forum.

But these are women from all over the world. In my own hometown, I don't know anyone who is experiencing what I am going through. I have surveyed all of my friends. They all look at me like they have no idea what I am talking about. Some of them have even asked me if I'm exaggerating a little. My sisters and my mother have never had hair loss. How many women will actually get telogen effluvium?

Is it a small number or a large number?" I have tried to research this and the answer seems to be that the number varies depending on who you ask. Without question, the highest percentage of women who get this type of shedding seem to be new mothers. I found a statistic indicating that as many as approximately twenty percent of women who have just given birth will have at least some hair loss.

Of course, the severity of this differs. While I had horrific shedding after I gave birth, I've had friends who just noticed a couple of days of aggressive hair loss that quickly passed. So my friends saw no real long term change in their hair while I most definitely could not say the same.

Telogen effluvium due to other issues (like dieting, surgery, medications, and stress) seems to be more rare. But many of us have read about women who have severe shedding and who have no children. Or, we have experienced this ourselves. It doesn't feel all that rare when it's happening to you. Specialists will tell you that 95 percent of all hair loss is due to androgens or genetic thinning. (Or the condition most commonly known as androgenetic alopecia.)

This is a very common statistic that you can find anywhere. So that leaves only five percent of hair loss to be divided up among the other types of loss like alopecia areata or traction alopecia. I've seen statistics which indicate that anywhere from 2 to 10 percent of all women will get telogen effluvium at some time in their lives. Obviously, if you have given birth, your risk factor goes up.

Some women (like myself) seem to be particularly vulnerable to any change in their bodies or in their lives. And it seems that some women are immune to this risks, and can have birth, get surgery, diet, and go off and on medications and never have it affect their hair. I know that it's common and understandable to hope that you are not alone. I can tell you that you're not. You may not personally know people going through this.

But all you need is a computer to find support and people who can sympathize. There are many forums where you can communicate and get support. I know that this isn't as ideal as knowing someone in your community or family understands, but for many of us, that's not our reality.

The Doctor Said I Am Prediabetic, What Should I Do Now?

The Doctor Said I Am Prediabetic, What Should I Do Now?

"Prediabetes" described a condition wherein blood glucose levels that are higher than normal but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes outright.

Pre-diabetes puts person so diagnosed at a higher risk for developing type 2 diabetes and associated complications.

The biochemical profile of the blood is with an A1C of 5.7% - 6.4%, a fasting blood glucose of 100 - 125 mg/dl and an OGTT [Oral Glucose Tolerance Test] 2 hour blood glucose of 140 mg/dl - 199 mg/dl. There are no clear symptoms of pre-diabetes, so, it is common to have it and not know it.

Pre-diabetes is really an opportune time because it gives one a second chance to straighten out their diet and lifestyle. It is not panic time. A Chinese proverb often quoted goes like this: A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

Diabetes is a chronic disease; pre-diabetes is analogous to the beginning step of the chronic journey of type 2 diabetes. At this stage one has numerous options. The very first decision to make is not go any further than pre-diabetes in the diabetes journey. Learn all you can from your doctor. Research it on the internet in diabetes forums and blogs. Make friends with others who are pre-diabetic or diabetic and exchange experiences.

Be entirely open-minded. There is more help out there than most realize. Analyze your food. Get a glucometer. Before any meal check your blood sugar and repeat 2 hours after meal. This is a simple way to determine which food gives you a higher glycemic response and build you self a list of foods to avoid. This is how you distinguish what your body is telling you versus what your taste buds are telling you.
Be diligent in doing this and respect the foods on you avoid list like a plague. No yea but. No rationalizations. Be blunt about not negotiating. This is a unique opportunity to prevent diabetes from gaining a foothold in your body. Learn about food. Search out nutritionists and dieticians and consult with them. They will introduce you to foods you don't know are good for you yet and ones you must begin to avoid.

At the stage of pre-diabetes, you can arrest diabetes from blossoming. If you are overweight, this is a time to embark on shedding some pounds. Get involved with exercise. It does not have to be knockout drag out iron pumping exercise. We are talking simple things like swimming, walking around the block, taking the dog out, riding a bicycle, power walking, using the steps instead of the elevator, etc.

When you go shopping, park the car a little farther away so you can put in some walking. It would not hurt to obtain a gym membership if only to use the very many equipment they have to achieve your exercise goals.
